Jan Wilcox Grows Her Business One Pumpkin at a Time

When Jan Wilcox pulls into the driveway of  Peter, Maddy, andThe Bishops - Maddy, Peter, Daniel and cousin visiting from Arizona Fauquier County Daniel’s house, she is met with squeals of delight from the Bishop children. Jan “the pumpkin lady” is here!

Every October for the past eight years, children and adults alike look forward to a visit from Jan Wilcox, a realtor with RE/MAX Regency in Warrenton because she is the “Pumpkin Lady.”

Jan started delivering pumpkins and her “Pumpkin Carving Contest” as a way to stay in touch with her clients.  In October, Jan travels to all her clients’ houses delivering pumpkins and visiting with her clients and their children.  By October 31, everyone emails photos of their carved pumpkins to Jan, and she awards prizes in various categories. The categories for pumpkin carving are “kids under 10 years of age”, “young  people 11-18,” and “family pumpkin.”  There are three winners in the following categories: “best design,” “most unusual,” “most creative.”

“Adults get as excited as the kids,” Jan laughs. Last year, Kat Flowers transformed a pumpkin into the death star from Star Wars. It took her an entire day to carve all the details.  “People are just so happy to get a pumpkin. It always makes them smile. And they really get into the contest.”

The pumpkin carving contest does take a significant amount of time each year. “It takes one full week to deliver pumpkins, three or four days to sort out the photos and get the winners’ certificates ready. And then a week to deliver all the prizes.” This is a huge time commitment, but the effort has paid off. “My pumpkin carving contest has been great for business. I have gotten lots of referrals, and it allows me to really keep in touch with my clients on a personal level. Since I have been doing it for eight years, I have seen my clients’ children grow up. And it makes me happy to be part of their Halloween every year.”

This year Jan has a blog  just for her pumpkin contest: http://www.janspumpkins.com/

The blog has photos of past pumpkins and pumpkin carving winners.
